- Instituted in Dec 1989 and gazetted as an ‘Approved Home’, ‘Approved School’ and a ‘Place of Safety’ by the then Ministry of Community Development (MCD).
^ back to top 1992 - Started receiving Juvenile Arrest Case (JAC) and Beyond Parental Control (BPC) cases.
- A Volunteer Club was set up in July 1992. The aim of the club is to recruit more volunteers and coordinate volunteers’ efforts and programs for MWH.

^ back to top 1995 - MWH Residents’ Day was initiated. It is an annual dinner cum award presentation organized especially for those residents who made good progress and achievement in secular and/or religious education. Each deserving resident received a trophy and cash rewards.
- Resource Development Unit (RDU) was set up to coordinate and look into fund raising efforts for the organization and the Home.
^ back to top 1996 - Nightly Tuition program for school going children was launched. A paid or volunteer tutor is engaged to assist the residents with their studies.
^ back to top 1997 - 2 residents participated in Olympic for Handicap in the United States of America, sponsored by Katong Special School.
- Capacity increased from 50 residents to 100 residents to cater to growing needs of the community.
^ back to top 1998 - Juvenile Court judge made a visit to MWH.
- MWH adopted by Suria for 2 years (1998 – 1999)
^ back to top 1999 - Converted a container into computer room for residents. There were 9 computers in total, donated by Hewlett Packard and Cybercare.
- Started placing illiterate residents, who are above their school going age, into Literacy classes.
^ back to top 2001 - 2 male residents were selected by their school to be involved in a community project in China for 2 weeks.
- 1 female resident attained Top Malay student for Sec 1 (NT) for Year 2001 at Temasek Secondary School.
- 3 male residents went to Bintan and Kota Kinabalu for community program organised by Cybercare.
- Suria, the Malay entertainment and information channel under MediaCorp TV Singapore, adopted MWH for another 2 years until early 2003.
- The First Lady, Mrs Nathan visited MWH.
^ back to top 2002 - ‘Residents’ Achievement’ book was created. It contains the compilation of residents’ academic and non-academic accomplishments since 2002.
- MWH’s soccer team emerged as the champions for the Lim Hsui Mei Cup 2002. This was an inter-Home soccer competition organised by MCYS for all Children’s Homes in Singapore.
- 1 representative from MWH participated in an overseas study trip to UK to study its licensing mechanism.
^ back to top 2003 - ‘Library @ MWH’ was set up by SMU student group. It provides residents with a cosy space and wider access to over 500 books to choose from.
- Residents’ Minimart @ MWH and bonus point system were implemented. This incentive system allows the residents to earn points through commendable voluntary behaviour. The points can be redeemed for food or basic toiletries and schooling items at the Minimart.
- MWH’s under 18 soccer team emerged as the Champion and won gold award for the Kolam Ayer Sims Drive 7-a side soccer tournament. Various Children’s Homes participated in the tournament.
- A male resident attained 2nd position in his Sec 2 (NA) final year exam in Oct 03 and was laterally promoted to Sec 3 Express in Year 2004. He was also appointed as a school prefect and peer group leader.
- Temasek JC Leo Club adopted MWH for 2 years from 2003 to 2004 for their community programme and coached residents in their studies.
- Singapore Management University (SMU) undertook various community involvement projects in MWH.
- Ms Dee Dethwa was invited to conduct Managing Offensive Behaviour Among Juvenile Offenders in-house for 10 MWH’s employees. Ms Dee Dethwa is an experienced social worker in children services and residential setting, and has experience in training and consultancy work in both UK and overseas. She holds MA in Social work, and a BA in Business Studies.
- 2 Judges from Juvenile Court made a Visit to MWH.
- Visit by NCSS Board Members.
- MCYS has chosen MWH to conduct SARS Emergency Exercise. The Director, Ms Ang Bee Lian and other representatives from MCYS and other 17 children Homes attended the session.
- MWH was selected to be one of the beneficiaries for the Presidents’ Challenge Charity. Filming was made by Mediacorp to feature the Home and a successful case on an ex-resident in conjunction with the Presidents’ Challenge Charity.
^ back to top 2004 The garden was given a new facelift. More new plants were sowed, the existing man-made pond was reconstructed and 2 outdoor woody tables and benches were provided to give a fresh outlook.
- A new conducive counseling room for residents’ group sessions was created; named “Youth Counselling Room”. The facilities in the room include a sofa set, TV, VCD player, fridge and materials for group sessions.
- The administrative office for staff in the rehabilitation unit was renovated to create more working space.
- A male resident was awarded with a Certificate of Commendation in Ghim Moh Sec School for his act of honestly returning a bunch of missing car keys to its rightful owner.
- MWH was adopted by Woodlands Wellington Football Club (WWFC) to help raise fund. Residents were to present during the match at the stadium as a cheering group.
- MWH soccer team emerged as the champion during a soccer tournament organized by Muhammadiyah Association’s (MWH’s parent organization) ‘Temasya Sukan Muhammadiyah’. The tournament received participation of youths from various mosques and associations in Singapore.
- MWH was placed Champion during MCYS Youth Excellence through Sports
- MWH’s soccer team won a 2nd place for Lim Hsui Mei Cup 04, organized by MCYS
MWH won Championship during MCYS Sports Day in 2004 & 2007 2007 was special as MWH was tops for all 3 divisions; Division A, B and C

- MWH’s Standard Operating Procedures and Residents’ handbook was revised in Jan 05. Residents’ handbook was given a better design and made to be ‘resident friendly’.
- 7- series Parenting Program and Religious Classes for parents were introduced in MWH. The aim of the workshop is to help parents understand and manage their teenage children.
- Formal training programme for new volunteers was implemented. Volunteers, who are mentoring the residents, are required to attend an orientation programme and encouraged to participate in a series of workshops. The topics include basic counseling technique and attending skills.
- Pre-discharge group sessions for the residents were introduced. Programmes include Community Involvement Programme (CIP) at Muhammadiyah Health & Day Care Centre, small group counseling sessions by social worker and mentoring programme with volunteer befrienders.
- MWH embarked on its own Sports Day which includes participation of all residents and their respective families in the activities. The program includes track & field activities and soccer tournament.
- Embarks on social integration program for the residents with local mosques.
- A male resident attained top Malay PSLE EM3 student in Singapore in Oct 05.
- In-house magazine for residents called “Majalah Hijjrah Remaja” started.
- Retreat for MWH organized by SSA consulting group PTE LTD
- Campaign “Speak no vulgarity” were implemented during Fasting month period. Significant improvements in the way residents speak to adults and among themselves were observed.
- MWH provides case studies for features on the TV program, ‘Hanyut 2’ series produces by Screenbox and MediaCorp. Filming and interview were conducted.
- Engaged the service of Consultants from SSA Counsulting Group Pte Ltd, to further help elevate the organization to a higher level.
- 4 staff committees were formed; namely Rehabilitation casework, program, discipline & reward and current practices committees. The members meet periodically to discuss, implement and review existing and / or new policies.

- Collaboration with Mendaki for residents to attend ‘Max Out Continuing Education Programme (CEP)’ for those out-of-school children at Jamiyah Business School.
- Parent support group programme for single parents, step families and intact families were introduced in Aug 06.
- Community Involvement Programmes (CIP) were extended for MWH’s residents to help clean and spruce up homes of the elderly and low-income families. This effort was done together with Masjid En-Naeem Youth Committee.
- With effect from 10 Aug 06, MWH is converted to an All-boys Rehabilitation Institution. The remaining 4 female residents have been transferred to Pertapis Centre of Women and Girls (PCWG).
- MWH was awarded Certificate of Recognition by the Ministry of Education (MOE) for its active support and participation in schools’ CIP programs.
- MWH was selected to be one of the beneficiaries for the Presidents’ Challenge Charity.
^ back to top 2007 - PODZ is a mentoring programme spearheaded by MCYS. MWH is one of the two VWOs participating in PODZ.Together with their mentors, life skills were imparted and concerns on their future plans being addressed.
- MCYS Sports Day - track & field event among children’s homes in Singapore

2008 - SLA has approved MWH application of the new site, the former Min Xin Pri Sch. The handing over of key was held in Nov 08.
- MWH embarked its very own ‘BOOK PROJECT’ in Aug 08. The Book aims to feature 20 stories of MWH former residents who are doing well after their stay in MWH. It also aims to raise funds for MWH new site, which is estimated to be ½ a million dollars. A volunteer driven project, the Book Project has 3 teams namely the Writing, Marketing and Event Managements team.
2009 - Renovation of the new site has started in early Mar 09.
- Our very last Welfare Fiesta cum inception of MWH Book Project, held at MWH premise at Mountbatten Road on 28 and 29 Mar 09. Invited GOH was Dr Fatimah Lateef.
